Single and twin skin asbestos cement roofs replaced across a motor company's buildings, over concrete portal frames that were neither square nor straight.

The project

Around 1,900 m² of single skin and twin skin asbestos cement roof coverings removed and replaced at Brakes Motor Company in Ilminster.

The new roofs are Kingspan KS1000RW composite panels with Filon roof lights. Between the frames we installed new insulated gutters complete with Plygene linings by HD Sharman, and the elevation cladding between the roof areas was removed and replaced with new panels.

The work gives the buildings a brand-new feel and appearance, inside and out, and was completed on time and on budget.

The challenge

Concrete frames, no straight lines

Many of the portal frames are concrete, so we installed a new timber framework on them to form new fixing locations for the roof panels.

None of the frames were square or straight, and the roofs included dual pitch slopes. It was a very challenging refurbishment, carried out with the aid of specialist equipment.
