The project

An industrial building on a steel portal frame, with a profiled asbestos cement roof that had reached the end of its serviceable life.

The roof and gutters were badly deteriorated, with water getting in and gutters failing. The owner came back to us after we delivered their project at Tapstone Road, Chard. The roof was beyond economical repair, so we advised a full strip and replace.

Over two weeks we replaced the roof with Tata Trisomet 333 composite panels, renewed the boundary wall gutter with new insulated gutters and linings, and insulated the parapet walls and cappings.

The challenge

Replacing the gutters in a day

The new gutters are larger than the originals, so the old gutters had to be taken out and the new ones fitted within a single day.

To make room for them, the team removed the eaves line purlins, cut off the purlin cleats, fixed new cleats to the structural steel frame, then refitted and aligned the purlins. It was tough going for the team.

Surveying an old building and redesigning the roof around it took care too. Everything fitted correctly, without issue.

The result

A big transformation

The building was uninsulated and had always suffered from overflowing gutters and a failing roof. Its thermal efficiency is now up to modern standards, the new panels are bright inside, and the long-standing gutter problems are solved with larger, easy-to-access gutters.

The tenant was very impressed with the upgrade and the difference it has made to their working premises.
